EGU 2012 session for DESIRE dissemination
Written by Erik van den Elsen

ImageThe DESIRE team will set up a session in the 2012 general assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU), in the Soil Systems Sciences division program.

The session is called SSS6.10: 'Desertification mitigation and remediation of land - approaches and solutions' and is hosted in the SSS6 'Soil Conservation' group. The session will host oral talks dealing with Approaches and Solutions in Desertification Mitigation, and will showcase the outcomes and conclusions of the DESIRE project, next to work presented by other researchers in the same field.

Up to now, 32 abstracts were submitted to the SSS6.10 session, a great success! All contributors: thanks for submitting!

More news will follow.

DESIRE booklet: Using land for the benefit of all
Written by Erik van den Elsen
ImageDESIRE Workblock 6 has issued a booklet about the integrated approach to finding solutions to desertification in cooperation with local partners. The booklet, called 'Using Land For The Benefit Of All', describes the use of WOCAT methods and participatory workshops in this process.

The WOCAT methodology for the selection of possible solutions to land degradation was developed in the DESIRE research project, which is funded by the EU. The DESIRE project allowed us to test the newly developed methodology at 17 sites in 13 countries around the world. In each study area the local research teams were trained in the use of the WOCAT methodology, and then they tried out the solutions they had chosen. Their feedback to the methodology was very positive overall. The methodology is being shared through various networks and we hope to contribute to new and successful collaboration between more researchers, advisors and land users, to increase sustainable land use.

DESIRE vision on Zero Growth supported by UNCCD
Written by Erik van den Elsen

During the recent UNCCD Land Day 5, organised on 6 December 2011 during the UNFCCC's 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) in Durban, South Africa, the DESIRE project issued a leaflet called 'The idea of Sustainable Development, and what it means for achieving zero net-growth in degradation'. This leaflet was written to proliferate the projects view on the Land Day theme 'Achieving zero net land degradation: impacts on climate change issues'.

The UNCCD now highlights the leaflet on its website, mentions its importance in fighting desertification and subscribes the leaflets conclusion: 'The big challenge for scientists is to present probabilities and possibilities based on science, in the context of a wider debate, including the impact on economic development.'

The UNCCD hereby underlines these important issues and supports and recognises the vision of the DESIRE project and the DESIRE project team.
